Tallow for Beautiful Healthy Hair!

Tallow is rich in skin-compatible nutrients and deeply nourishing, which can make it a powerful, ancestral remedy for scalp and hair health—especially during perimenopause, when hormonal shifts impact both.

Benefits of Using Tallow on the Scalp During Perimenopause

1. Deeply Nourishing for Dry, Aging Scalp

• Tallow is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K—essential for skin and follicle health.

• During perimenopause, estrogen decline often leads to scalp dryness, irritation, or flaking.

• Tallow acts as an intensive moisturizer, mimicking the skin’s natural oils (sebum) better than most plant oils.

2. Strengthens the Skin Barrier

• Contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and palmitoleic acid, both antimicrobial and skin-repairing.

• These help to protect and repair the scalp barrier, reducing sensitivity, itchiness, or redness common in midlife.

3. Supports Hair Growth Conditions

• A well-nourished, calm scalp provides the optimal environment for hair follicles to thrive.

• Regular tallow massage may help:

• Reduce inflammation at the follicle

• Prevent hair thinning

• Improve anchoring of hair in the scalp, reducing fall-out

4. Balances Scalp Oil Production

• Because tallow is bioidentical to human sebum, it helps regulate oily or dry scalp conditions rather than exacerbating them.

• Especially useful if hormonal changes have made your scalp feel oilier one week, dry the next.

5. Reduces Breakage and Adds Shine

• Applying tallow through the scalp and into hair ends can help:

• Seal split ends

• Protect the hair shaft

• Add softness and shine, especially to coarse or gray hair that’s become more wiry or brittle

6. Low Risk of Sensitivities

• Unlike essential oils or even some plant oils, tallow is non-irritating, making it ideal for sensitive, reactive skin—which is more common during perimenopause.

How to Use Tallow for Scalp Massage

  1. Warm a small amount between your fingers (it melts at skin temperature).

  2. Section your hair and apply sparingly to the scalp.

  3. Massage gently for 5–10 minutes to stimulate circulation.

  4. Leave on for 30 minutes to overnight.

  5. Shampoo out with a gentle cleanser (you may need two rinses if using a lot).

I infuse my tallow with herbs like chamomile and lavender and I add a few drops of essential oils like Lavender and Frankincense ( but always patch test).
